Gitxsan artist Timothy Foster

Timothy Foster

Gitxsan Nation · Lax Seel (Frog) Clan · House of Niisto

Timothy Foster is from the Lax Seel (Frog) Clan in the House of Niisto within the Gitxsan Nation, located on the Skeena River in northwestern British Columbia. Raised in Hazelton by his mother and three older sisters within the Gitxsan matrilineal tradition, family and culture have always been at the heart of his journey.

As a young boy spending time with his father in the village of Kispiox, Timothy was introduced to the late Walter E. Harris, O.C., and his carving studio, “The Hiding Place.” The scent of cedar and the masterful artistry of Gitxsan carvers sparked a passion that continues to guide his path.

Timothy’s work honours the teachings, stories and visual language of his ancestors, sharing the beauty and strength of Gitxsan art with the world. His Spirit of the Land artwork is featured in Ki’LaLa’s backdrop and panel collection.
